Terminology

Korean to English meaning (Words are hyphenated to show sylables)

Sa-bum-nim : Main teacher or instructor
Thi : Belt
Simsa : Grading test
Sudo : Knife hand
Twim-yo : General term for flying or jumping techniques
Jae-Ja : Student pronounced `jay - jah'
Kyok-pa : Breaking techniques
Choo-muk : Fist eg. Ap choomuk means front fist (also `Choo-Meok')
Golcha : Hook

Blocks:

Makki : A block also 'Marki'
Handan Makki : Outer forearm low section block
Sandan Makki : Outer forearm high section block
Sudo Makki : Double knife hand block
Moomtong Makki : Trunk of body' block, inner side block
Kum Kong Makki : Twin outer forearm block
Duro Makki : Scooping block that catch's and lifts an attack
Golcho-Makki : Hooking block (As in pattern Yul-Kok)

Stances:

Sogi : Stance
Annun Sogi : Riding stance
Gunnun Sogi : Walking stance
Niunja Sogi : 'L' stance, 70% of weight on rear leg

Basics:

Jun-bi : Ready (also used as 'ready' stance for some patterns)
Cha-ryot : Attention, meaning to stand with toes and heels together, hands at side of body
Kyung-ye : Means to bow (look to floor when bowing to flag, otherwise at partner or instructor)
Do : Art or way of life
Do-bok : Art clothes, (The TaeKwon-Do uniform, often called a Ghee in Karate)
Do-jang : Place of Art, the area in which we study and train. (Also called a Do-Jo in Karate)
Go-man : To stop, finish or end
Jiru-gi : A strike, typically referred to a punch, also a punching excercise
Ki-hap : A loud shout or yell to help concentrate energy and premote proper breathing
Hyung : A pattern, a series of consecutive techniques for simulated attacks and defences eg 'Chun-ji Hyung'
Shi-Juk : To start or to begin
TaeKwon-Do : Foot (kicking, stomping)-fist (punching, smashing) -art or way

Kicks:

Chagi : General term for a kick
Ap Chagi : Front kick
Yop Chagi : Side kick
Dol-lyo Chagi : Turning kick, also Dola
Dwee Chagi : Back kick
Bandola Chagi : Spinning Hook kick

Counting:

Hana : One
Dul : Two
Set : Three
Net : Four
Dasot : Five
Yasot : Six
Ilkop : Seven
Yodol : Eight
Ahop : Nine
Yul : Ten
